Rather than your standard painting confined to a small rectangular canvas, I decided to think of what the subject matter of my piece would behave like if it could explore beyond its boundaries. How would it interact with the outside world? How would the canvas itself change with the subject's interaction? 

 

What better way to represent this feeling of curiosity and exploration than depicting the typical behavior of a mischievous cat. Cats love boxes, but they also love jumping out of them at the slightest hint of something to play with. The freedom of a butterfly freeing itself from the canvas is interrupted by the captivated kitten. With the butterfly and cat escaping their boundaries, the rest of the painting would become unbalanced and thus begin to tilt. This adds three dimensional weight to what was once only a plain 2D piece.          

 

Materials: Canvas wrapped museum board, cutouts of canvas board, & acrylic paint.
